Christopher D. Alexander
Private Christopher D. Alexander, born on November 26, 1986, in Madison County, Kentucky, was a dedicated member of the Kentucky National Guard’s 2123rd Transportation Company, based in Richmond, Kentucky. A lifelong resident of Berea and a follower of the Baptist faith, he committed himself to serving his community and country. Tragically, at the age of 22, Private Alexander passed away on December 28, 2008, at St. Joseph Berea Hospital due to injuries sustained in a vehicle accident. He was laid to rest with full military honors at Pilot Knob Cemetery in Berea, Kentucky.
The 2123rd Transportation Company has a distinguished history of service. In 2004, the unit was deployed to Kuwait as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where they were responsible for transporting heavy equipment and supplies to various locations, including supporting the 1st Cavalry Division and the 1st Armored Division during critical operations. The unit’s duties involved navigating challenging terrains and ensuring the timely delivery of essential materials to forward operating bases and combat outposts. Their commitment to excellence was evident during their deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During this mission, the 2123rd conducted over 150 convoys, covering more than 600,000 miles across eastern Afghanistan. They delivered critical supplies to over 20 different forward operating bases and combat outposts, often under direct combat conditions. The unit faced more than 40 direct combat engagements, resulting in the awarding of 18 Purple Hearts and over 80 Combat Action Badges to its members. Their exemplary performance led the 101st Airborne Division to specifically request the 2123rd for challenging transportation missions, highlighting their reputation for reliability and bravery.
Private Alexander’s service with the 2123rd Transportation Company reflects his dedication to his nation and his willingness to undertake demanding and perilous missions. His commitment to duty and the sacrifices he made are a testament to his character and serve as an inspiration to those who continue to serve.
