Sergeant Bobby M. Billingsley was killed in a automobile accident on 19 September 1951 near Essex, Maryland while serving on federal active duty.

Billingsley was born 9 June 1922, in Monroe County, Kentucky. He enlisted in the United States Army on 28 July 1947 and served with the 279th General Hospital until he received an Honorable Discharge as a Private First Class on 21 November 1949.

He enlisted into Battery A, 623rd Field Artillery of the Kentucky National Guard at Tompkinsville, Kentucky  on 26 June 1950. Billingsley was ordered to federal active duty with his unit on 23 January 1951.

He died as a result of injuries incurred in a civilian automobile accident near Essex, Maryland, on 19 September 1951, while on duty. Billingsley was attending a military school at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. The line of duty investigation at the time of his death ruled that his death was in the line of duty. At the time of his enlistment in the KYNG he listed his occupation as farmer and his residence as Summer Shade, KY.

The 623rd Field Artillery Battalion, headquartered in Glasgow, Ky., with firing batteries in Tompkinsville, Campbellsville, Monticello, and service battery from Springfield, was alerted on December 23, 1950. It was to enter into active service commencing January 23, 1951. On February 2, 1951, the Battalion boarded a troop train for Fort Bragg, N.C. His unit arrived in Pusan Korea on 22 December 1951 and returned to Kentucky in late fall 1952.

Billingsley was married to Marxie (Jeffery) Billingsley, they had one son who was born after Billingsley’s death. Billingsley is buried in the Old Soldiers Cemetery, Tompkinsville, Monroe County.
