Guy Winfrey Bowles
Master Sergeant Guy W. Bowles was born at Glasgow, Barren County, Kentucky, on 28 May 1908. He was living in Summer Shade, Metcalfe County, Kentucky, when he enlisted in the Kentucky National Guard at Glasgow on 23 May 1932, becoming a member of Headquarters Troop, 123rd Cavalry. His unit was converted in 1940 to Battery B, 106th Separate Battalion, Coast Artillery (Anti-Aircraft). He entered into federal service on 6 January 1941. Relieved from active duty and returned to state control on 8 October 1941. In November 1941, he was re-elected Chief of the Glasgow Police Department. Bowles was recalled to active duty on 10 February 1942.
Bowles died of a heart attack on 30 May 1944, at Camp Henry Rodney Adair, Astoria, Oregon. At the time of death he was serving with the Military Police Platoon, 70th Infantry Division. He is buried in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery, Glasgow, Barren County, Kentucky.

Memorial Day added another casualty among Barren county’s fine young men in the service. News was received that day of death of Master Sergeant Guy W. Bowles, 36, at Camp Adair, Oregon, where he had been serving for some time with the military police of the 70th infantry division. Mr. Bowles died a few hours after he had been stricken ill. He was in the camp hospital. The body was shipped Wednesday and funeral and burial will be held here. He was fine, estimable young man.
Sergeant Bowles was a member of the old National Guard unit of Glasgow, and trained with that organization at Camp Hulen. He was later transferred to California and then to Oregon. His wife, the former Corinne Hall, had returned here some time ago after remaining with him several months. He had been in service about three years and was a former deputy sheriff of this county, and at the time of entering the service was chief of police of the city of Glasgow. A native of Summer Shade, he was the son of Mrs. Inez Hartison Bowles and the late Mr. I. N. Bowles, former cashier of Summer Shade bank.
Besides his wife and his mother, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Wilma Simmerly and Miss Ruth Bowles, of Oakland, California, and a brother Harold K. Bowles, now training for the U. S. Navy at University of Chicago.
