Private Charles J. Burckle, 27, of Louisville, Jefferson County, was seriously wounded in action in France on 7 August 1918 while serving with Battery A of the 146th Field Artillery, 41st Division. Burckle died of his wounds on 8 August 1918.

According to William R. Wright's “A History of the Sixty-Sixth Field Artillery Brigade American Expeditionary Force”, published in 1919 – Burckle was wounded when a high explosive artillery round struck his 155 mm canon at Lhuys France during Aisne-Marne operation..

Burckle enlisted with Co E, 1st Kentucky Infantry Regiment of the Kentucky National Guard on 30 July 1917. He also served with Battery D, 138th Field Artillery. Burckle left the United States for France on 12 June 1918 and died of wounds some two months later. Burckle is buried in the St. Louis Cemetery in Louisville.
