Second Lieutenant John Daugh Herd, 31, of Booneville, Owsley County, Kentucky, died at 1:45 a.m. from complications of Typhoid Fever at Camp Perry, Ohio on 22 August 1913. Dr. Herd was a member of Company I of the 2nd Kentucky Infantry Regiment.

Dr. Herd was attending a national shooting competition at Camp Perry and was ill when he arrived on August 14th. Dr. Herd joined what was then known as the Kentucky State Guard in June of 1910 and was promoted to Corporal and later First Sergeant. In February 1912 he was elected Second Lieutenant of his company. Dr. Herd was an expert rifle shot and though ill he still competed and made third place on the Kentucky Guard state team for 1913 held at a range in Earlington, Hopkins County, Kentucky. The winners boarded a train to travel to Camp Perry, Ohio for the national shooting competition where he succumbed to his illness.

John graduated from the University of Louisville Dental School in 1905. He was a dentist in civilian life believed to have been in private practice in Booneville. Dr. Herd is buried in the John C. Wilson Cemetery located near Sturgeon, Owsley County.
