Mark Landers Sherman
Lieutenant Colonel Mark Landers Sherman was born on February 5, 1962, in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky, to Wesley Thomas and Sara P. Pieper Sherman. Growing up in a loving household, Mark was the middle child, sharing his childhood with one sister, Missy, and one brother, Chris. He attended Lexington Catholic High School and went on to further his education at the University of Kentucky, where he laid the groundwork for his future endeavors.
Mark enlisted in the military on August 22, 1985, joining the Kentucky National Guard and became an accomplished UH-60 helicopter pilot. With a deep commitment to serving his country, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, where his skills and leadership were put to the test in challenging conditions. Mark’s dedication to duty and excellence earned him the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and he served as the Executive Officer for the 63rd Theater Aviation Brigade at the time of his passing.
On October 9, 1993, Mark married Yvonne Denise Mahan in Florence, Kentucky. Together, they raised three sons, Will, Kyle, and Noah, who became the pride and joy of Mark’s life. He balanced his military career with his responsibilities as a devoted husband and father, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his family.
Tragically, Mark's life was cut short when he succumbed to a service-connected cancer on March 2, 2011, in Lexington, Kentucky, at the age of 49. His contributions to the military were recognized posthumously when he was promoted to Colonel effective on the day of his passing. He was laid to rest with full military honors at Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville, Jessamine County, Kentucky.
Mark’s legacy continues through the annual Mark L. Sherman Memorial Golf Scramble, held in his honor by the National Guard Association of Kentucky with proceeds benefiting the Kentucky National Guard Leader Development Foundation. This event not only commemorates his service but also supports the development of young leaders and those in need.
He is remembered not only as a dedicated soldier and accomplished Army Aviator, but also as a loving husband, father, and friend. His impact on the lives of those he served with, and his family remains a testament to his character and commitment to service. Mark L. Sherman’s life was one of honor, and his memory continues to inspire those who knew him.
